Taste By Jacqueline May In an act of courage and grace, the staff of Vin Gallery has made a successful transition from what could have been a disheartening beginning. Originally scheduled to open their renovated downtown gallery space in the Guadalupe Arts Center this month, they experienced an abrupt change of plans due to a fire in the building. They have relocated to a small space in the same building as Gallery Shoal Creek, 1500 W. 34th, where they are displaying a selection of art from "Just a Taste," the show they had already hung in the arts center when the fire started. Thanks to painstaking cleaning, the artwork looks none the worse for wear. Shawn Camp's large untitled abstract painting features thick application of gray paint to form subtle geometric shapes, with a metallic undercoat visible at some junctures to provide additional interest. Sandra Fernández has some interesting small stitched three-dimensional collages using various materials. Grant Whipple has a fine offering in Water Bowls, a small, carefully rendered work in a restrained palette. Adde Russell is showing a delicately drawn and painted work on paper, featuring a combination of natural and mechanical imagery. Amy Lindsay-Joynt, who just gets better and better, continues to shine with her delicately layered landscape piece, textural material used beneath the wiped glaze to good effect. Regina Allen's Flip features amusingly tame bondage imagery from a past era, with an unusual combination of textile imagery. These are just a few of the artists showing work in the new Vin Gallery space, which has now resumed regular operating hours, Tuesday-Saturday, 10-6pm. |
