Landmarks is the public art program of The University of Texas at Austin. Its projects are located throughout the main campus and are viewed by thousands of people every day.
In 2008, Landmarks launched by partnering with one of the world's greatest museums, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The museum made an unprecedented loan of 28 sculptures that are exhibited throughout the main campus and are free to the public at all times. The long-term loan includes works by such internationally renowned contemporary artists as Magdalena Abakanowicz, Louise Bourgeois, Deborah Butterfield, Anthony Caro, Jim Dine, Donald Lipski, Beverly Pepper, Antoine Pevsner, Tony Smith, and Ursula von Rydingsvard.
Landmarks is building upon the Metropolitan Museum sculpture initiative by acquiring and commissioning works of public art that feature diverse media and demonstrate major trends in the visual arts. An early project was the installation of the monumental sculpture Clock Knot by abstract expressionist Mark di Suvero. The heroic sculpture stands on the corner of Dean Keeton and Speedway and demonstrates the power of public art to transform the university's landscape.
Today Landmarks has 30 works of public art installed at 17 locations throughout the main campus and many additional projects underway. Its projects beautify the main campus and engage visitors and the university community with art of the highest quality.
