Gallery Night
Open until 8 pm
West End Gallery Night: 1st Thursday, open until 8:00 pm. Visit eight galleries within walking distance. Ample parking is available. September's featured venue is the Wally Workman Gallery. "Maximal/Minimal" includes paintings, drawings, and collages by Helmut Barnett. Originally from Germany, Barnett now works from a renovated 100 year old house in downtown Austin. "The title of my show could easily be applied to the effort involved in making the work. Some pieces are dashed off in a moment of decisive inspiration, while others demand a full measure of time and labor," says Barnett. "For me, making art is a continuous process of building on my previous work. I add, I discard; sometimes one succeeds in getting to the essence of the thing."

Sketching in the Galleries

Observe, learn, and draw surrounding by art.

Join artist and Art School faculty member Germaine Keller and focus on the drawings in Modern Art. Modern Lives: Then, especially those by Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Picasso aand Manet. Then move to the contemporary side, Modern Art. Modern Lives: Now, especially the texture and movement in the work of Julie Mehrutu. In repeating the artist's process by sketching from his work, you can gain a richer understanding and appreciation for the work itself.

This casual drop-in art activity is for all experience levels. Bring your own art supplies, or borrow some from the FamilyLab or purchase at the Museum Store. (Only dry media in the galleries please.) Sketching in the Galleries will occur every Saturday from 12-2pm through November 1. Each week a local artist facilitates drawing.
