La Vida Brinca

Another well-known Austinite, writer, film-producer and founding donor of the Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern and Mexican Photography, Bill Wittliff unveils a series of photographs this month at the Stephen L. Clark Gallery. The series is from Wittliff's long awaited publication by The University Press entitled, Bill Wittliff La Vida Brinca: Tragaluz Photographs.

La Vida Brinca documents elements of Hispanic life, such as fiestas, religious observances, street scenes, faces and landscapes. Wittliff uses pin-hole photography, giving scenes a soft focus. Consequently, images like, "The Church at Ranchos De Taos" have a dream-like quality. They appear dematerialized, fleeting, even haunting.

One can purchase a hardcover copy of La Vida Brinca with introductions by Elizabeth Ferrer and Stephen Harrigan and photography by Bill Wittliff at the Stephen L. Clark Gallery.

This exhibition is on view through May 23. For more information, please contact (512) 477-0828

Photography Abounds in May

Davis Gallery is showing photographs by Bill Nowlin. Austin philanthropist, Nowlin has always loved photography, but it wasn't until 1996, when he retired, that he pursued it on a serious level. Here he pulls together an impressive plethora of images from his 2005 travels in China, Cambodia and India.

The exhibition includes numerous (nearly 100) prints with a wide variety of Asian subjects. There are some strong individual portraits in addition to more candid group shots. Architectural sites captured include the Taj Mahal and Cambodian Temples, many with exquisite exterior sculptural reliefs.

Particularly provocative is an installation of photos that when lined up, give a panoramic view of the Great Wall of China. It's unclear whether the seams between them are intentional or not, but somehow they standout.

This exhibition is on view through May 20. For more information, pleas contact (512) 477-4929

Rounding out this month's offerings is F8 Gallery's, "Terra Firma." In addition to two photographers, Laurence Parent and Richard Griffin, this show highlights work by painters, Maxine Price and Michael Klung.

Parent reveals black and white photos from his upcoming book, Timeless Texas while Griffin focuses on the female nude. Price prefers abstracted landscapes with thickly layered paint. Klung's views of nature are representational yet present opportunities for meditation and contemplation.

"Terra Firma" is another fine group show examining four artists' and indeed man's ranging relationships with what surrounds us and lies firmly beneath our feet.

This exhibition is on view through July 1. For more information, please contact (512) 480-0242.
